Leung Kee at Aberdeen in Richmond

Leung Kee

This was my first time eating at the Aberdeen food court. What made this food court unique was layout; you see the food stalls before the seating area. The seating area was very pleasant. They took advantage of the natural lighting with the ceiling to floor giant windows.

I walked around the food area looking for a restaurant. I wouldn’t help noticing that there was a line up at Leung Kee. Most stalls had one or two customers, but Leung Kee had eight or more. By far, Leung Kee was the busiest. I lined up at Leung Kee checking out their menu.  They even had a LCD TV displaying orders ready for pick up.

Bauhinia in Richmond

There are so many HK style cafes in Richmond to choose from: Bauhinia, Alleluia Cafe, E-Canteen, Boston Steakhouse, etc. Bauhinia is higher end and is more expensive than others. The food, service and interior design are definitely better than other HK style cafes. Bauhinia and Pittsburg at Crystal Mall in Burnaby are sister restaurants.

Bauhinia’s menu comes in a la carte or set meals. The Western set meals include a drink and soup with garlic bread or a dinner roll, and the Chinese set meals only come with a drink. Soup choices are Russian Borscht or cream of mushroom or corn. The beauty of HK style cafes are the drinks: You can order drinks hot or cold in Horlicks, HK milk tea, HK coffee, almond, Ovaltine, and lemon iced tea, jJust to mention a few. Most people will order from the set menu because it comes with a drink.

Hainanese chicken at Ho Yuen in Richmond

Update (04/10/09): Sorry, but Ho Yuen is closed.

I bought some computer parts from NCIX today. NCIX is my go to store for computer related products. I usually go to Ho Yuen for lunch if I’m going to NCIX. This place is quite busy at lunch time. There is a constant flow of customers coming through. Ho Yuen reminds me more of a HK wonton noodle house type of restaurant. The decor is quite a few years old but the place is clean.

I usually order their Hainanese chicken rice and it never disappoints me.

Pelican Seafood Restaurant in Vancouver

Usually, we go for dim sum on one of the weekend days.  This weekend was no exception.  My mom asked if I wanted to go to Prince Seafood Restaurant or Pelican Seafood Restaurant. I choose Pelican because I haven’t been there since early last year and I wanted to review them. We got there around 940 AM and the restaurant was half empty.

We sat down and placed our order. The first plate of dim sum came ten minutes after we placed our order. Each dim sum dish came five minutes after each other with the last dish coming ten minutes after the second last dish.  The food was served way too slow!

Takeout from Bing Sheng in Vancouver

For lunch on Friday, we went to one of our favourite pho places in Richmond: Green Lemongrass. Naturally, being a favourite place, we didn’t exactly eat lightly, with large soups, 2 types of spring rolls, etc.

Full and happy, we returned to the office when we unexpectedly saw Vanessa bringing by some food from dim sum at Bing Sheng. Now, as full as I was, it is extremely hard for me to say no to a few bites of dim sum!

Aside: Sitting at the corner of Renfrew and 2nd Ave., Bing Sheng doesn’t look like much, but I’ve heard good things. I also heard that it’s a popular restaurant/chain in Asia, and they brought it over here (if anyone can verify, please leave a comment!).

Back to the food: Vanessa knows exactly what I like, so I was not surprised to see my two favourite dim sum dishes: Shrimp Spring Rolls, and Kwai Fa Bao!
