Cafe Gloucester in Vancouver

Cafe Gloucester

After visiting a friend in the hospital, we decided to grab a quick bite nearby. We decided on Cafe Gloucester; this would be my first time, but everyone else seemed to rave about it.

Upon entering Cafe Gloucester, it definitely looks and feels like a more ‘upscale’ HK Cafe, kinda of like Bauhinia, but not quite as clean.

Cafe Gloucester Menu

The menus at Gloucester look like they’ve been around the block a few times, but my mom always told me that it’s whats on the inside that counts! This rings true for Gloucester as well, as they have a fairly extensive menu with all the items you would usually expect to see at a HK Cafe, and more. Although touted to be on the more expensive side of HK Cafes, I found the they are quire reasonably priced. They might be slightly more expensive than places like Alleluia, but it’s still very reasonable.

Gloucester House Special Fried Rice at Cafe Gloucester

I had the Gloucester House Special Fried Rice, their specialty, I guess. It’s not that the dish wasn’t good, it was actually quite tasty! It just didn’t seem like anything ’special’. That said, I would still get it again if I’m in the mood for fried rice.

I completely blanked out when trying to remember the name of this dish, but I believe it’s the Cream Corn & Cod Fillet on Rice. The filet in the dish was evenly flavoured, and didn’t overpower the sauce. The corn was a little sweet, and made a nice addition to the dish by adding some texture. I’ve never been a fan imitation crab meat, but, as a whole, mixed in with the rest of the ingredients, the dish was quite good.

BBQ Duck Vermicelli at Cafe Gloucester

I also got a chance to try some of the BBQ Duck Vermicelli. The noodles seemed a bit dry, but it had a nice flavour. It was lean slightly more towards the bland side, but Chris, who ordered the dish said that he liked it nonetheless.

For dessert I went with the Deep Fried Banana with Vanilla Ice Cream. Unfortunately, I was too excited and forgot to take a picture. Needless to say, the dessert was awesome. My deep fried banana came in a fancy glass, and had a generous portion of vanilla ice cream. You can’t really mess up deep fried bananas and ice cream, so my only complaint was that the ice cream melted faster than I expected.

Cafe Gloucester seems to live up to it’s reputation of being consistently good across the board. They have a nice atmostphere for an HK Cafe, and back it up with quality food. Gloucester will definitely be at the top of my list of chinese food, if I’m in the area.

Five Loaves Rating:
Value: 7/10
Quality: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Verdict: Great HK Cafe food at reasonable prices make Gloucester a winner!

Yes, when I’m visiting the hospital, this is one of my favourite standbys when I’m tired and just need some good old hk style food.

There’s lots of choices and I especially like their baked dishes.

Their grilled meats are pretty tasty too.
