After a playing an afternoon round of golf at the Golden Eagle Golf Club we went to Osamu Sushi for dinner. This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants because of their authenticity and great food but we only get to go when we golf in the Coquitlam or Pitt Meadows area. Its been a few years since I last visited, so I was hoping the food was as good as I remembered.
Osamu went through a redecoration in the time since I was here and the new decor resembles an Earls more than a Japanese restaurant. They used to look like a standard sushi house but the modern look better matches their menu.
We started with Yam Fries and Grilled Squid. The yam fries are lightly battered and well seasoned. Originally we thought the fries were baked but the waitress confirmed that they are deep fried. They were crispy and tasted excellent with the wasabi mayo dip. The squid was grilled to perfection. It was lightly brushed with some teriyaki sauce and came with a side of mayo. The texture was tender and soft.
I chose the Salmon Carpaccio. The wild sockeye salmon was lightly seared then sliced thinly. The dish consisted of white onions, sesame seeds, green onions, ikura, mayo, and lightly drizzled with soy. The salmon had an amazing taste and texture: light, not overly salty and it melts in your mouth. I loved the presentation of this dish, it was colorful and pretty.
Dom choose the Paradise Roll which came highly recommended by the waitress. The roll had tuna on the outside and was wrapped with mango, cream cheese and prawn tempura with tempura bits on the side. This roll was refreshing, the tuna was fresh, the mango was tangy and sweet. I used my chopsticks to obtain a roll onto my plate and started adding the tempura bits on top of the roll. I added some wasabi and dipped it in the soy sauce. What a refreshing and yummy taste!
I also chose the Jumbo Dynamite Roll. This has been one of my long time favorites from Osamu. I was introduced to this during my first visit to Osamu in 1998 and instantly fell in love with this roll. Look at the massive and meaty prawn! They drizzle a special house sauce inside the roll. Its like a light teriyaki sauce but there something really unique about it. This roll has lost some of its finesse due to many other excellent dishes at Osamu. Overall, the presentation of the dishes were splendid and tasted excellent!
Five Loaves Rating:
Value: 8/10
Quality: 9/10
Overall: 8.5/10
Verdict: Definitely, my most favorite Japanese restaurant of all time!
