Five Loaves

Wendy’s recently announced a new flavor for their Boneless Chicken wings: Sweet & Spicy Asian Chicken. I didn’t even know that they had Boneless Chicken Wings to begin with, so Danny and I decided to go check it out for lunch.

We arrived at the Wendy’s on Annacis Island to find ads for the new ‘Asian Chicken’ wings all over the place. I was only there for a snack, so I got a single order of the new Sweet & Spicy Asian Chicken flavored boneless wings. Danny got the entire meal with fries and a soft drink.

I didn’t exactly know what to expect, so the price surprised me. My single order of boneless wings was $4.99, and Danny’s meal was $6.99. We sat down at a small table and began to dig in. First, the flavors: My Sweet & Spicy Asian Chicken boneless wings were actually quite tasty. The sauce has a very definite ‘Asian’ flavor. It’s certainly not authentic by any stretch of the word, but it tastes pretty good. Danny’s Bold Buffalo wings were also very good! They had just the right amount of spiciness.

Secondly, I noticed that the texture of the wings was much different that what I expected. I was expecting something akin to McNuggets; something more like processed chicken. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE McNuggets, but it was nice to have actual little pieces of chicken breast. After biting into a boneless wing from Wendy’s, you could actually see that the inside of it was one piece of meat, instead of processed meat mashed together. The boneless wings really reminded me of bite sized chicken strips.

After Danny and I sampled both flavors, we actually decided to trade. I liked the spiciness of the buffalo, and Danny preferred the more Asian flavor of the Sweet & Spicy. Overall, the boneless wings were pretty good, though slightly expensive. They are different enough to McNuggets that they aren’t direct competitors, so I wouldn’t say that I’d have to choose between one or the other. McNuggets would probably win anyways…
